Berlin, Germany
Few marathons combine sporting history and city history quite like the Berlin Marathon. In 1990, just days before German reunification, 25,000 runners took part in the first edition to pass through the Brandenburg Gate. Berlin has since become synonymous with speed: the official race organizers state that 13 marathon world records have been broken on its course, more than at any other marathon.
